Save Money on Fuel with These Top TipsFebruary 27, 2013
With the country’s economy in the state it’s currently in, everyone from little Jimmy to Great Aunt Doris is trying to save a few quid on a day to day basis, whether that means buying supermarket own brand corn flakes or cutting out the menthol cigarettes. You don’t necessarily have to make such sacrifices though – in fact, there is a much simpler method of cutting down on your spending, one which doesn’t involve any sacrificing at all! It is easy and won’t negatively impact your life in any way. Three little words: Drive. More. Efficiently.

Drive Sensibly
Driving aggressively – going above the speed limit, accelerating rapidly, braking hard and frequently – can lower your fuel efficiency by as much as a third, depending on your speed. This means that, if you were to drive in a more sensible manner, you could reduce your fuel consumption. If you normally get, say, thirty miles to the gallon, by being less aggressive you could increase it up to 45 mpg!

Remove Any Excess Weight
If you’ve got any unnecessary items weighing down the boot, get them out of there! This is even more important if you’ve got heavy stuff in the back like a bunch of tools or a stack of lumber, so make sure you keep the load to a minimum. The smaller your vehicle, the harder its fuel economy will be hit – for every 45 kg of junk in the boot, your car will drop about 2% in its efficiency. This might not seem like all that much, but it soon adds up as the miles go by!

Stick to the Speed Limit
As a rough rule of thumb, for every 5 mph you drive over 50 mph, it is about the equivalent to paying an extra five pence for every litre you consume. Think how outraged you would be if you saw the prices on the pumps jump by 5p tomorrow! Now think that you’re already doing this to yourself. You’re currently getting much less fuel than you pay for – by sticking to the lower end of the speed spectrum you will get what you deserve, and be able to travel for much longer distances at a much lower cost.

Don’t Be so Idle!
If you find yourself idling excessively whilst waiting for your passenger to grab today’s papers, or as you’re waiting to pick someone up, you’re wasting petrol, and a lot of it. If you’re going to be parked up for more than about thirty seconds, turn off that engine! It only costs a few seconds’ worth of petrol to start up your engine again, so it’s better than leaving it to sit in idle for ages, which could cost you a couple pence per minute. Obviously, don’t turn off your engine when you’re just going to wait a couple seconds, as this will be both wasteful and potentially damaging to the starter.

First carpools are onlineJune 30, 2006
Good news for people in Byron Bay and Canberra.

needaride.com.au has now integrated a carpool system into their website for people in Byron Bay and the University of Canberra. If you want to set up a carpool for your region, just tell us.

Now you can search for a car or passengers that will go the same route as you thus eliminating the typical scene in a traffic jam of cars with only one person inside.

The biggest benefits include less air and noise pollution, less money spent on petrol and a great way of meeting new people.

As usual this new needaride.com.au feature will allow you to find people or a car for your carpool project in an easy and confidential way.

    Try it out now!

Special Thanks to Ron from Canberra and Andrew from Byron Bay for their important contribution. Hugs and kisses to lovely Boi in Bankog :)

Website Update - two new featuresMay 3, 2003
Since we at needaride try to make our website every time more user-friendly we have concocted a great new idea for those who have to go that same route every day/week.

Now commuters can enter permanent rides, which basically means that they can enter their offer/request once and it will be valid for months and months.

Basically the only thing you have to do when you enter your offer/request is click the box permanent rides. Then you will be asked on what day you usually make your daily/weekly trip. The rest of the information is the usual: where you're leaving from, where you're going to and what time you plan on leaving.

Our second new feature benefits all those who request rides. Now they can also enter stopovers making it more likely to find a ride, or at least for a part of your trip.
For example if you enter a request for a ride from Townsville to Melbourne and enter as stopovers Brisbane and Sydney, you will receive offers for rides from for example Brisbane to Melbourne and Townsville to Sydney as well as from Townsville to Melbourne.
